Reading and Resource Lists

A guide for academic staff on Reading and Resource Lists

Finding your reading list

Your reading list is the main place where you will access readings and resources to support your class-learning and to help you to complete your assignments. You will have different reading lists for each of your modules.

To find the list for a module log into My Dundee and access the module. The list for the module will appear under the Library Resources tab. Click on Library: Resource Lists and you will be prompted to open the list in a new tab.

Pop-out window in mydundee. It reads your browser settings require that you open this link in a new tab. Below there is a button which reads open in a new tab.

If you see something else here it might be that there is an error with how the list is displaying, or your module might not have a reading list yet. Contact your tutor in the first instance if you are having problems viewing your list.

Item tags

Tag Definitions

Individual items on a list may be tagged as Essential,  Further reading, or Suggested for purchase. An example of a tag is highlighted below. Some items might not have tags, consult with your tutor if an item doesn't have a tag and you are unsure whether this is an Essential resource.

An item in a reading list with its tag highlighted. The tag reads further reading.

Here is a quick guide to the tags you will come across in your list and what these mean.

  • Suggested for Student Purchase - usually textbooks which will be heavily used throughout the module, and which students are strongly encouraged to purchase
  • Essential - core texts that every student must access
  • Further reading - defined as supplemental reading around the subject to further or deepen understanding

Where items are tagged  Essential, the Library will give these priority attention, and aim to purchase in E-format if possible. If an E-format is not available the library may also place items in the Main Library's Short Loan Collection.

Reading list software update - New UI

From January 2025 you will see some small changes in how the Leganto reading list platform looks and functions. This is due to an update in the reading list software focused on  improved accessibility, particularly when lists are accessed on smaller devices like phones, or if you use screen-reading software to support your learning. Watch the video below for more information on these new features.

Reading list features

  • Filtering and search functions - useful for navigating lists with a lot of items
  • Lists are organised by sections and tagged by importance
  • Quickly see whether list items are available online or needs to be borrowed from the library - you will also be able to see if library copies are available
  • Notes - your tutor may add notes to individual items to provide context, or to indicate what section to read
  • Click the three dots to the right hand side of any item to:
    • Save to your favourites - save useful citations to your favourites so that you can easily find these later. You can access your list of favourites from the tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
    • Quick Cite - generate a citation for the item (make sure and check these are correct using your school's citation guide)
    • Mark item as done - a new feature, see below for details

An example reading list from the viewpoint of a student. The options to filter and search the list at the top of the page are highlighted. Links to access two of the items in the list online or in the library are highlighted at the bottom of these items respectively. The menu of actions for an individual citation is expanded. It contains 3 options to save as favourite, quick cite or mark as done. All three options are highlighted.

Marking items as done

This is a new feature available with the New UI which allows you to mark items as 'done' as you progress through the material for your course. This is just for you to mark your progress and this information will not be available to the module tutor. Click the three dots on the right-hand side of the item that you'd like to mark as done. Once an item is marked as done it will appear like this

You can undo this by clicking the three dots at the side of the citation again and selecting 'Mark as incomplete' from the drop down menu.
