Reading and Resource Lists

A guide for academic staff on Reading and Resource Lists

Requesting digitisations

When no ebook exists and you might only require a single chapter, a section or article to be made available digitally the library can provide digitised chapters and articles from our physical stock through our Higher Education Copyright License with the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA). All digitisations must be processed by the library and registered with the CLA to comply with our license.

You should not undertake any scanning for teaching yourself. You should not add any material to MyDundee or your reading list which the University does not have access to (as a PDF or linking to an unauthorised site). This can incur significant fines for the University if we are audited by the CLA.

REQUEST LIMITS FOR DIGITISATION

Journal articles - 2 articles per single issue
Book chapters/sections - 1 chapter or 10% of total pages

Please do not use the request digitisation function when you want to request an e-book for an Essential text. Instead add the item you'd like to be made available electronically to your list and mark this as Essential. The library will purchase an ebook if this is available.

HOW TO REQUEST DIGITISATION

Ideally you should add items you would like to be digitised as the material type 'Book Chapter' or 'Article' depending on the kind of resource that the digitisation is coming from. When you add in the chapter/page/volume/issue numbers this will mean your digitisation request will auto-populate with the correct details and this will help the library to ensure we digitise the correct materials, and it's clear to students what they should be reading. If the item has already been added as a 'Book' or 'Journal' you can still change the item type and this will keep all the other information in the citation (title, ISBN etc). See further details here.

In your resource list, click where it says Full Details at the right hand corner on the item you would like to be digitised to expand the details. (Remember to make sure that the item isn't available online already).

Sample citation with full details option visible at top right hand corner

Make sure that you are on the Item actions tab for the item and scroll down to Library Services. If the publisher has given permission for the resource to be digitised (or if there aren't enough details for us to confirm whether the resource can be digitised or not) the option to request digitisation will appear.

The item actions tab of a sample citation. At the bottom of the tab under library services is the option to request digitisation which is highlighted yellow.

If the item has already been added as a chapter/article this will auto-populate with the correct details. Otherwise fill out the form in as much detail as you can (Remember you can only request 1 chapter or 10% from a book or 2 articles per journal part/issue). If you would like to request multiple sections (under 10%) from the same text you can click the + Page range option beside the page range field to add multiple ranges.

Pop-up window that appears after Request digitisation link is clicked. The window contains fields for inputting chapter numbers, page numbers and a note field.

The Resource List Team will be in touch with you if there are any problems obtaining a digitisation of requested book chapter or journal article.

If you require any help with digitisation, please contact readinglists@dundee.ac.uk

Films and other resources held in DVD format

Pre-Covid, copyright rules allowed for the showing of a film/dvd owned by the University Library to students in a lecture theatre. The same copyright rules can be applied to showings made in MyDundee (Blackboard). If you wish to explore this option for students on your module, and screenshare a live showing of a DVD through Blackboard you will need to consider the following:

  • Please check whether the film is available in our subscribed online service, currently Box of Broadcasts,  as new content is added regularly
  • You will need to ensure your equipment can play a DVD (an external DVD drive can be requested from IT via Help4U)
  • If you do not own a copy of the required DVD, you can request to borrow the item from the library by emailing resources@dundee.ac.uk Please make clear in your request that the item is required for live streaming, how long the DVD will be required for and whether you will be using the click and collect or postal service.
  • Assistance on the process of screensharing in Blackboard is available here

Please note the copyright restrictions below

  • Screening should be limited to teaching staff and students registered on a particular module only
  • Screening should be arranged for a defined time or times (taking note of students in different time zones)
  • Only use platforms which are closed loop and password protected, such as Blackboard
  • Students must be made aware that they are seeing the film as part of their module, and that they must not record the film while it is being streamed
