Turnitin - Student

Troubleshooting and tips

What is it?

There are a number of reasons why a submission may fail, or you are unable to see your similarity report, or your feedback. It's always a good idea to upload at least an hour before the final deadline, in case you discover an issue.

If you get an error message, make sure you read it carefully!

Unable to upload file

You may find that you can't open the upload window. The most common reasons for this is:

  • You have already uploaded a file, and the due date has passed.
  • You have already uploaded a file, and you are only allowed 1 upload.
  • The due date has passed, and you are not permitted to upload late.

Contact your instructor to ask for help.

File size and format

If you are able to upload your files, there are still a few potential issues. Make sure you read the error message, these are the typical issues.

File format

In most cases, files should be one of

  • Microsoft Word (DOC and DOCX)
  • Corel WordPerfect
  • HTML
  • Adobe PostScript
  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • Portable Document Format (PDF)
  • OpenOffice (ODT)
  • Hangul (HWP and HWPX)
  • Powerpoint (PPTX)
  • Google Docs via Google Drive

Note: Your lecturer may have asked for a specific file type (most usually Word). Make sure you follow that instruction.
Remember that you can use MS365 (Office) free on your own devices via the University subscription.

File size

You should ensure that you file is under 800 pages, and under 100MB. If you have a lot of large images, you may find yourself going over that file size. You can compress your files.

Word Count

Turnitin needs at last 20 words to work. If you have a lot of scanned items (e.g. Maths, Ward reports etc), then you will usually be asked to include a cover sheet - which, by the time you have added your student ID and other details is more than 20 words. Talk to your tutors if you are not sure.

Submitted the wrong file

If you have submitted the wrong file, review our guide on how to resubmit your files.

The important thing is to contact your instructor, or your school office. This is why it's important to try to do your submission during UK working hours (9-5, Monday-Friday). Someone will be available to give you some answers.
