Research Metrics: Measuring Research Performance

Explore

SciVal provides readymade analyses of the selected entity under the Explore module.

User can view and customise analyses of the entity based on geographical (national, international) and sector (academic, government, corporate, medical) based collaborations.

They can also have a map or table view of all current collaborators and identify potential collaborators.

Under this module users can analyse trends in research fields and visualise them using graphs, tables, charts, and key phrase analyses.

Topics: Users can analyse the topics and topic clusters under which the publications of an entity are distributed, either within the institutions or worldwide. Details about the topic can be viewed by selected the information button next to the topic or topic cluster. The worldwide prominence percentile shows the relevance of the topic based on how many publications are currently citing or being cited in this topic.

Research Areas: Users can define their own research area using a query string. All the publications that are available in scopus within the year specified can be viewed and analysed in research areas.

Subject Areas: Users can view and analyse publications of an entity under subject areas as defined by the ASJC, QS or THE.

SDG: Users can view how the publications of an entity are distributed among the UN Sustainable Development Goals and compare them against the rest of United Kingdom and worldwide.

Policy Impact: Users can view the policy impact of an entity’s publications. They can view which policies have cited the publications and which publications have been cited in policies.

Patents impact: Users can view the policy impact of an entity’s publications. They can view which patents have cited the publications and which publications have been cited in patents.

Benchmarking

The Compare Module allows users to compare or benchmark various entities using the metrics provided by SciVal.

There are three ways by which users can benchmark entities in this module:

  1. All metrics: All the entities which are pre-defined or user-defined can be compared using all the metrics available in SciVal. By default, SciVal displays a single metric (Scholarly Output, which can be changed) over time for the entities selected in the side panel.
  2. Ranking Metrics: Using this method, users can benchmark institutions and groups based on either the Times Higher Education (THE) or Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. Both THE and QS have their respective sets of metrics, and users can toggle between the two tabs to compare institutions based on these metrics.
  3. Collaboration Matrix: Users can analyse the Researchers groups on how they are collaborating using four metrics – Scholarly output, field weighted citation impact, citation count and citation per publication.

Reporting

The Reporting module contains all the analyses and reports that you have created from the Explore and Benchmarking Modules. Within this module you can

  1. Create new high-level reports using a predefined template or from templates that you create.
  2. Edit existing analyses and reports or add new analyses to existing reports.

My SciVal

The My SciVal module encompasses all entities that are predefined within SciVal or defined by the user.

This module enables users to:

  1. view all predefined entities in one location and add them to the panel for analysis.
  2. create, edit, and delete various types of entities.
  3. share their entities with other SciVal users through this module.
