Digitisation / CLA HE scanning licence

Do you need students to read particular chapters, articles, extracts from published material?  The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Scanning & photocopying licence, allows the  scanning of extracts from  published  material, and making them available to students for the purposes of teaching, subject to certain limitations and exclusions. The Library Digitisation Service manages the provision of the pdf,  & record keeping for the material used. Material is requested via the 'Request Digitisation' option, available to all list publishers in the online  reading list system.List.

How are  readings made available?

As pdf's, linked to  your online reading list.  Students should access the list via the link in their MyDundee or Moodle module - this will log them in.

The entry will have  the same 'View online' link as ebooks/ejournals.

Digitisation availability dates

How long are  digitised readings  available for ?

Dates for the availability of Digitised readings  are tied to the relevant reading list time period.  Readings used for one course, can also be used for another course, and can be renewed the following year.

Quick guide to the licence

The CLA HE licence, is designed to support teaching.  It cover both photocopying & scanning - this section covers scanning, but the same conditions apply to photocopying.

We (the LLC) must own or have access to (e.g. a Departmental copy)  an original copy of the work , or a copyright fee paid copy of the work

which is 

  • Published in the UK and not on the  list of excluded works or publishers
  • Published in a country which has OPTED IN  to the scanning section of the CLA UK HE scanning & photocopying licence  & is not on a list of excluded works or publishers 

or where the 

  • Publisher has given a global mandate  to say their works can be scanned regardless of the country of publication


The amount we can scan (for any one course of study)  is usually .

  • one chapter or 10% of a work covered by the licence
  • one article from each issue of a journal covered by the licence

If more is required, we can see if the publisher has signed up to the Second Extract Permissions service,  the price will usually be charged per student per page.


We  can scan from any edition of a work covered by the licence,

  • but can't use Chapter 3 from the 3rd edition and chapter 4 from the 4th edition for the same course, unless you can prove that the material is not covered in the later edition.
