Research Services

We can advise and support you on all these issues. In the unlikely event we are unable to answer your query we will direct you to someone in the University who can.

Who are we?

Research Services is a division of the Library and Learning Centre, Culture and Information Directorate and our remit is to provide support based on these key themes:

  • Open Access:  funding and administrative support to ensure your work is as accessible as possible.
  • Research Excellence Framework (currently REF2021): a mediated deposit service to ensure compliance with the REF's Open Access Policy.
  • Discovery Research Portal (the institutional repository): training and support, using Pure software, to ensure your Discovery Research profile is up to date. This includes, when possible, importing metadata from your previous institution.
  • Research Data Management: assistance with data management planning and funder requirements and compliance.
  • Research Postgraduate Theses: final stage archiving in Discovery and embargo maintenance.

We can also provide information about ORCiD, intellectual property and copyright, ResearchFish and the provision of DOIs for data and publications.

Discovery Research Portal

We provide training and support on how to use Discovery Research Portal, the University of Dundee's digital repository. Pure is the software that underpins the portal.

It provides a comprehensive source of information covering all aspects of the University’s research activities and outputs, in a single location.

Types of written content range from peer-reviewed articles and conference papers, books, chapters and theses. Where possible, a full-text version of the work is made available for download.

In addition, research datasets, images, multimedia, software and other types of research activities can also be recorded, deposited and shared publicly.

Do you have an ORCID?

ORCID demonstration account

Many publishers and most funders (as a condition of your grant) mandate an Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID).

Research Services strongly advise you get one to distinguish yourself from other authors with the same name as you.

Did you know your research outputs in Discovery can be pushed out to ORCID? Our LibGuide, Persistent researcher identifier system: have you heard of ORCID®? has further information.

Make sure you take your research with you wherever you may end up in the world!

Research Data Management

Did you know researchers are now expected to produce a Data Management Plan (DMP) by both Research Funders and their institutions?

Need advice on the following?

  • Writing your DMP
  • Funder's data policies
  • Data storage
  • Depositing your data
  • Sharing your data/ assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOI's)
  • Licensing data
  • Data across statements

Email Discovery@dundee.ac.uk to make an appointment with Philippa Sterlini for more support and help.

For further information go to our Research Data Management webpages.

Archiving your research thesis

PhD and Research Masters at the University of Dundee are required to submit one digital copy of their thesis to Discovery Research Portal upon completion of their final examination and once all corrections have been approved. Prior to archiving, the Thesis Deposit Agreement (TDA) must be completed by the student in collaboration with their supervisor. Failure to do so may delay the validation of the thesis.

Thesis information - things to consider:

Have you already published the work? Yes.

  • Make sure your publisher is happy with an early version of the work being made available.
  • The publisher may ask you to embargo the thesis until they feel they have benefited from their publication (usually 1-3 years).

Does the thesis contain 3rd party copyrighted material? Yes.

  • Option 1 - supply a redacted version along with the full version.
  • Option 2 - contact the copyright owner for permission to re-use the content, and provide proof of this when you archive the work

Are you likely to want to publish the thesis in any format in the future? Yes.

  • We recommend a 1 year embargo is applied for articles and a 3 year embargo for books and chapters.

Does the thesis contain sensitive, confidential or commercially valuable data? Yes.

  • Supply a redacted version and a full version.
  • Contact your supervisor or Discovery@dundee.ac.uk if releasing the work could cause problems for either your research subjects, yourself or the institution.

Need an alternative to traditional metrics?

Altmetric Logo with black text

Try Altmetrics Explorer for Institutions (or Alternative metrics) which complements traditional metrics such as 'times cited' counts displayed in databases like Web of Science and Scopus. Measure how your research is making an impact in social media and the Web.
